Great Tips for Winter Grilling

The common misconceptions is that grilling season begins on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day. Well we are here to dispel the myth.  Nearly two-thirds of grill owners polled in a recent poll by Hearth, Patio & Barbecue said they grill year round. If you are one of those people who grill year round, we are here to offer you some winter grilling tips to help you enjoy your patio in the coming winter months.

Dress the part. Make sure to bundle up appropriately, of course.  The thing to avoid is anything that will dangle and poses a fire risk like scarves, tassels, or other kind of accessory.

Position Your grill. Shield your grill from the wind the best that you can and place it about 10 feet away from combustible surfaces and away from materials like siding, that heat could get damaged from excessive heat. To protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning always grill in a well ventilated area.  This means that enclosed patios, garages, or beneath a cover is not a good idea.

Check for Safety. Check out the burners, jets, and gas lines thoroughly for blockages that restrict the gas flow. Ensure that the flame burns blue not yellow. Yellow flames can show clogged air inlets or burners that you will need to adjust.

Make a Plan. Pre-heating your gas grill can take up to twice as long in cold temperatures. The cook time for certain foods on a gas or charcoal grill may also take longer, so it is wise to use a meat thermometer to make sure meats and fish cook thoroughly.

Keep a lid on it. For your grill to keep as hot as possible, cook with the lid closed.

Enjoy your patio in the winter months if you can.  If you choose to grill, keep these tips in mind and you will have more success!
